چکیده

11 With technical advances in wildlife telemetry, the study of cryptic predators’ responses to prey 12 distribution has been revolutionised. Considering marine predators, high resolution tagging 13 devices were developed lately to collect long and precise diving datasets. In this study, we 14 investigated, at fine temporal and spatial scales, changes in the horizontal movements and 15 diving patterns of a marine predator, the southern elephant seal. Satellite tracking data collected 16 on nine seals were processed with switching state-space models. Seals’ body condition, as a 17 proxy for foraging success, was estimated through changes in drift rate from Time Depth 18 Recorder (TDR) data. We identified (1) statistically distinct behavioural modes along the 19

The intensity of horizontal and vertical search in a diving forager: the harbour seal

BACKGROUND Free ranging foraging animals can vary their searching intensity in response to the profitability of the environment by modifying their movements. Marine diving animals forage in a three dimensional space and searching intensity can be varied in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Therefore understanding the relationship between the allocation of searching effort in these two sp...

Can We Predict Foraging Success in a Marine Predator from Dive Patterns Only? Validation with Prey Capture Attempt Data

Predicting how climatic variations will affect marine predator populations relies on our ability to assess foraging success, but evaluating foraging success in a marine predator at sea is particularly difficult. Dive metrics are commonly available for marine mammals, diving birds and some species of fish. Bottom duration or dive duration are usually used as proxies for foraging success. However...

Horizontal and vertical movements of Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi): conservation implications of limited migration in a marine sanctuary

Despite the ecological and economic importance of the Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi), little data exist regarding the movements and habitat use of this predator across its range. We deployed 11 pop-up satellite archival tags on Caribbean reef sharks captured in the northeast Exuma Sound, The Bahamas, to assess their horizontal and vertical movements throughout the water column. Shar...

How Elephant Seals (Mirounga leonina) Adjust Their Fine Scale Horizontal Movement and Diving Behaviour in Relation to Prey Encounter Rate

Understanding the diving behaviour of diving predators in relation to concomitant prey distribution could have major practical applications in conservation biology by allowing the assessment of how changes in fine scale prey distribution impact foraging efficiency and ultimately population dynamics. The southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina, hereafter SES), the largest phocid, is a major pre...
